Public facilities
Since mining first began, controlling territory was an issue between towns and companies. Mining law stipulated that companies could dispose of the land as they saw fit without local authorities having any say in the matter. To rival with private companies, public authorities also set out to provide excellent facilities such as the Bruay-La-Buissière stadium and its superb Art Deco swimming-pool. Included in the scope of the World Heritage, the town halls in Bruay-La-Buissière and Carvin feature sumptuous stained-glass windows and stylised ornamentation, confirming this political determination to lay claim to mining identity.
